GEMS is committed to protecting the online and offline privacy of users and donors. Portions of our site are directed to our adult donors, friends, and supporters, while other areas include content specifically designed for girls like the podcast and our merchandise. Please review the information below to familiarize yourself with our policies on privacy, and contact GEMS if you have any questions.

(Effective Date June 1, 2020)

GEMS adheres to the standards of ethics laid out in the Association of Fundraising Professionals “Donor Bill of Rights:”

  • To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.

  • To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.

  • To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements.

  • To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.

  • To receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition.

  • To be assured that information about their donation is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.

  • To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.

  • To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization, or hired solicitors.

  • To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.  As well, GEMS will not sell donor information to any third-party entity, nor share donor information with outside parties without the express consent of the donor.

  • To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful, and forthright answers.

This Privacy Policy applies to information collected online when visiting our website and governs online data collection and usage at the GEMS sites.

You do not have to provide personal information to visit and enjoy many features of our sites. To make a contribution online, purchase products (if applicable), sign up for e-updates or newsletters, or engage in certain other activities, we will request personal information from you, such as your name, address, and e-mail address.  We ask users to certify before submitting an online donation that they are eighteen years of age or older.  Any personal information provided to GEMS by users who identify themselves as being under thirteen years of age will be deleted or destroyed by GEMS immediately upon receipt or as soon thereafter as reasonably practicable.

We use the information that you voluntarily provide to fulfill your requests, such as signing you up for e-updates or newsletters, and for surveys and user research to improve our site.

We do not share your personal information with third parties, other than with our staff who provide technical support for our site or help fill your purchase order. We cannot provide e-updates or newsletters to any user under thirteen years of age.

We use the personal information we collect to fulfill your requests. For instance, if you wish to donate to GEMS, or purchase a product online (if applicable), we will use the information you provide to provide you with information (including by text messages), process your donation or purchase order. We also use collected information to evaluate and administer our service, respond to any problems that may arise, and to gauge user trends to determine what features are of most interest to our visitors.

We may, at times, produce reports containing aggregate information about our users such as demographic, age, and online usage information. This allows us to offer information and features that are most relevant to our users. We do not include personally identifiable information in these reports.

We use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology to protect credit card data during transmission. GEMS staff members are made aware of its website privacy practices and we limit access to personal information to those employees with a specific need to retrieve this information. GEMS may give other companies access to our information database, but only if necessary to allow them to provide technical or fulfillment services to GEMS. We may also give other companies access to the information necessary to fill your order if you purchase products from our site or to process your donation. Our technical and fulfillment contractors must agree to use personal information only to process or fulfill your requests or to service our site.

We will occasionally update this Privacy Policy as necessary to maintain the highest protection for our users and to comply with a changing environment. We recommend that you check the policy when you visit our site to be sure you are aware of and understand our current policy. If we make material changes to this policy or in how we will use or collect your personally identifiable information, we will prominently post such changes prior to implementing the change. We will not make retroactive changes in how we handle previously collected personal information unless legally required to do so.

We want all our visitors to have fun navigating our site and urge you to use common sense whenever disclosing personal information on this site or anywhere on the Internet.
